Translating the Mill

The Mills Archive Trust and Upminster Windmill invite you to an interactive, creative workshop, "Translating the Mill", on Saturday, 17th October (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM) at Upminster Windmill.

For centuries, windmills and watermills have been vital instruments of local agriculture, trade and community life. While they are filled with fascinating machinery, the technical language used to describe them, terms like Petticoat, Sack Hoist, Shoe, Hopper, and Jog Skrye, may feel out of reach for first-time visitors, school groups, and younger audiences.

In this hands-on 2-hour workshop, we are gathering mill enthusiasts, curious minds, and community members to "common" the language of milling. Through fast-paced word games, sensory redefinitions, and paper collage using historical archival drawings, participants will help us draft a community starter & kid-friendly glossary. The outputs will inform future educational materials, visitor guides, and digital resources.
